Medical Emergencies

Sometimes, you may need medical attention right away! But you do not always need to go to an emergency room.  This section will tell you what to do when your health is in danger.

What is a “medical emergency”?

A “medical emergency” is when you think that your health is in serious danger!  A medical emergency includes severe pain, a bad injury, a serious illness, or a medical condition that is getting worse very quickly.

If you have a medical emergency:

  • Get medical help right away! Call 911 for help or go to the nearest emergency room. You do not need to get permission from a provider.
  • Make sure that someone calls your provider to help you follow up after your emergency care.

What if I have a medical emergency when my provider’s office is closed?

If it is an emergency, get care right away! You do not need permission from a provider. You can dial 911 for help or go to the closest emergency room, hospital, or urgent care center.

What is covered if I have a medical emergency?

You can get covered services whenever you need it, anywhere in the United States!  Passport Advantage will also help arrange your follow-up care at no charge.

What is “urgently needed care”?

“Urgently needed care” is when you need health care right away, but your health is not in serious danger.

If you need urgent care:

  • First, call your provider!
  • If you are outside of the Passport Advantage service area and you cannot contact your provider, you may get care from an out-of-network provider in the United States.
