Passport Health Plan to Examine the Human Side of Cultural Competency in Healthcare

Louisville, KY - On Wednesday, October 10 and Thursday, October 11, 2007, Passport Health Plan’s Cultural and Linguistic Services program will present a free conference, Cultural and Linguistic Services in Healthcare: The Human Side for physicians, nurses, public health representatives, dentists, social workers and community advocates.

The conference, which is the third in this series, will feature the debut of They Bring the World, a Passport Health Plan video presentation that chronicles the journeys of six former refugees from their native countries to their new homes in Louisville. Three of the people featured in the video will also participate in a panel discussion that will take place after the viewing.

For the remainder of the conference, participants will hear from local, regional, and national speakers on issues ranging from cultural competency in mental health and among aging populations, to health literacy issues in diverse populations and the importance of collecting the race and ethnicity data for improved patient care.

Larry N. Cook, MD, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of University Health Care, Inc. which does business as Passport Health Plan said, “This conference is indicative of Passport Health Plan’s commitment to improving member health and to supporting its participating physicians. As a health plan and as a civic partner, we recognize and celebrate our increasingly diverse communities. At the same time, we take responsibility for giving our providers the information they need to provide quality care that is also mindful of the host of cultures, languages, and ethnicities that exist in and around the Louisville area”.

According to recent reports, thousands of immigrants, many of whom are better educated and more diverse than the nation’s foreign-born population as a whole, have moved to Louisville in the past decade. Approximately 38 percent of Louisville’s immigrant population is from Latin America, in addition to 15 percent from Africa, and 35 percent from Asia and the Pacific. As many as 90 languages are spoken in the homes of school-aged children residing in the area. Passport Health Plan’s Cultural and Linguistic Services program has been in existence since 2000, and seeks to advocate on behalf members, regardless of cultural or linguistic status.
