Cultural Competency Conference Set for June 16 and 17 Galt House Hotel

Passport Health Plan and the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resource and Services Administration (HRSA) Offers Achieving Cultural and Linguistic Competency in Healthcare Conference

Louisville, KY -A conference dedicated to improving cultural and linguistic competency in healthcare will be held June 16 and 17 at the Galt House Hotel in Louisville. Keynote speakers for the conference will include Mark D. Birdwhistell, MPA, Undersecretary, Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Commonwealth of Kentucky; Shani Dowd, LCSW, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation in Massachusetts; and Adawale Troutman, MD, MPH, Louisville Metro Health Department.

Since 1990, the face of our communities has changed tremendously. The Hispanic population in Kentucky, for example, grew 173 percent between 1990 and the year 2000. In 2001, Jefferson County Public Schools reported that 75 languages were represented in their English as a Second Language program. Over 150 healthcare providers, advocates, and persons with limited English proficiency are expected to attend. The conference will include local, regional, and national experts, who will discuss Kentucky’s growing immigrant population and the unique barriers and opportunities they present to human service providers. The conference will also address issues such as federal regulations from the Office of Civil Rights and what they mean to agencies and consumers, how service providers can achieve compliance, and how to facilitate services for individuals with special communication needs.

The conference agenda is as follows:
